On October 13, 2026, Vienna’s Universitätsring will become a lecture hall.
The federal government’s austerity plans are threatening our universities. Massive budget cuts are on the horizon—even though as recently as May, some 40,000 people across Austria took to the streets to protest them. At the same time, there are growing public calls for higher academic performance requirements for students and for tuition fees. We are being made to bear the brunt of this crisis. We say: Not on our watch! But cuts don’t just affect students, faculty, and researchers—they affect all of us. Because a society that cuts funding for science is cutting into its own future.
That is why, on October 13, we will stand together against proposed budget cuts, tuition fees, and academic pressure: Our “Ringvorlesung” will take place on the “Ringstraße” infront of the University of Vienna, where we aim to highlight the potential consequences of budget cuts at Austria’s universities. What happens when tutorials are canceled, positions aren’t filled, classes get more crowded, or cuts have to be made to research and infrastructure? These are exactly the questions we’ll be focusing on. Join us!
