The Social Fund of the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH) offers all students who are members of the ÖH and are in a particular financial emergency situation the opportunity to receive a one-off grant every 12 months. 

There is no application deadline. Due to the large number of applications, the processing time is currently around 3 months. As soon as the application has been processed, we will notify you in writing.

Advice is primarily given by telephone or e-mail. Personal counseling in the Taubstummengasse can be arranged by telephone or e-mail during the counseling hours (see consultation calendar). Please note that a personal counseling cannot take place without an appointment.

The Social Fund of the Austrian National Union of Students (ÖH) offers all students who are members of the ÖH and who are experiencing particular financial hardship the opportunity to receive a one-off grant every 12 months. The hardship can be caused by a sudden increase in housing costs, tuition fees, expenses for care and support of own children, expenses for medical/psychological/psychiatric treatment as well as other emergency situations.

Students who are eligible for support from the ÖH Social Fund must:

  • be in social need according to the guidelines of the ÖH Social Fund,
  • do not receive a student grant (or do not receive the full amount)
  • have successfully completed 16 ECTS or 8 SWS of courses and exams in the last academic year (*not recognised) Exception: In the 1st semester, you do not need to show any academic performance.
  • study at a university with a co-operation between the local university representatives and the ÖH Social Fund.
  • have not exceeded twice the minimum period of study (example: A Bachelor’s programme lasts 6 semesters. You can apply for the ÖH Social Fund for up to 12 semesters.)

From 1 July 2026 onwards, applications will be submitted via a digital tool. Visit the website, register and submit your application. You can check the status of your application at any time via the website.

The Social Fund of the Austrian National Union of Students is financed in equal parts by the Federal Office of the Austrian National Union of Students, the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research and the student body of the (private) university, university of applied sciences or university of teacher education at which the student is enrolled.

The current processing time is 3 months. However, we make every effort to process each application as quickly as possible. Decisions will be sent to you by post (or e-mail) and the funding will be paid into the account you provide in your application.

Social Fund

The Social Fund is the most frequently disbursed fund. The general requirements must be met. Please note our guidelines!

Children’s Fund

Do you have unexpected costs for your child (therapy, children’s furniture, etc.) or during pregnancy that you cannot afford (childcare costs (crèche, nursery, kindergarten, etc.) also count)? Contact us for help from the Children’s Fund. Please note our guidelines!

 

Psychotherapy Fund

The Psychotherapy Fund can be used to cover the costs of current or necessary future psychotherapy. Please see our guidelines!

 

Mediation Fund

If you have a dispute with your parents about maintenance, you may be eligible for out-of-court mediation. An application can be made to the ÖH Mediation Fund to cover the costs of the first three hours of mediation. Please note our guidelines!

 

Housing Fund

Housing is expensive. If you have been living in your apartment for more than three months and can barely afford the rent, or if you are in a financial emergency due to energy bills, you can apply to the ÖH Housing Fund. Please follow our guidelines!

 

Fund for disabled students

Do you have a 50% disability and therefore have extra work to do for your studies? Apply to the Fund for Disabled Students. Please follow our guidelines!

  • Student ID card
  • Study sheet for the current semester
  • Collective transcript and/or confirmation from your supervisor regarding the progress of your thesis
  • Registration form
  • Rental agreement
  • Bank statements for the last three months showing the current balance of all accounts you hold
